Introduction | परिचय

Devanagari is one of the most beautiful writing systems in the world. Learning to write it correctly requires understanding its structure and practicing stroke order.

The Structure of Devanagari | देवनागरीची रचना

Every Devanagari character hangs from a horizontal line called the शिरोरेषा (śirorekhā) or headline.

Key Principles | मुख्य तत्त्वे

Writing Vowel Diacritics (मात्रा) | मात्रा लेखन

When vowels combine with consonants, they become diacritical marks.

Diacritic Forms and Placement

Vowel Diacritic Position Example
अ (a) Inherent क = ka
आ (Aa) After consonant का = ka
इ (i) ि Before consonant कि = ki
ई (i) After consonant की = kī
उ (u) Below consonant कु = ku
ऊ (u) Below consonant कू = ku
ऋ (r) Below consonant कृ = kr
ए (e) Above consonant के = ke
ऐ (ai) Above consonant कै = kai
ओ (o) Above consonant को = ko
औ (au) Above consonant कौ = kau
अं (am) Above (after headline) कं = kam

Important Note on इ (i) Diacritic

The ि diacritic is written before the consonant but pronounced after it:

Writing: First write ि, then write the consonant
Reading: ki (the sound is after the consonant)

Example: क + ि = कि
         (k) + (i) = ki

This is the only diacritic that appears before the consonant visually.

Conjunct Consonants (जोडाक्षरे) | संयुक्त व्यंजन

When two consonants come together without a vowel between them, they form conjuncts.

Types of Conjuncts

1. Halant Form (Virama)

When a consonant loses its inherent vowel, it’s marked with ् (halant/virama):

क + ् + य = क्य
(k) + (no vowel) + (ya) = kya

2. Stacked Consonants

Some conjuncts are written by stacking consonants vertically:

त + ् + य = त्य
     ┌──┐
     │त │
     │य │
     └──┘

3. Special Conjunct Forms

Some consonants have special forms when used in conjuncts:

Consonant Normal Conjunct Form Example
्र प्र (pra)
र् र्क (rka)
त् त्य (tya)
न् न्त (nta)

Common Conjuncts

Conjunct Components Pronunciation
क्ष क + ष kṣa
त्र त + र tra
ज्ञ ज + ञ jña/dnya
श्र श + र śra
न्त न + त nta
न्न न + न nna
त्त त + त tta
ल्ल ल + ल lla

Cultural Note | सांस्कृतिक टिप्पणी

अक्षराभ्यास (Akṣarābhyāsa) - The Writing Initiation

Traditionally, children begin their education with a ceremony called अक्षराभ्यास. In this ceremony:

  1. The child is seated on the lap of an elder
  2. The elder guides the child’s hand to write the first letter
  3. The first letter written is usually ओम् (Om) or श्री (Shri)
  4. This is done on a plate of rice, symbolizing a fruitful educational journey

This tradition emphasizes the sacred nature of learning to write in Indian culture.

The Importance of Good Handwriting

In Indian culture, good handwriting (सुलेख - sulekh) is considered a virtue. Students practice writing on slate boards or in notebooks, and competitions for good handwriting are common in schools.
