Comparatives and Superlatives in Marathi | मराठीतील तुलनात्मक आणि उत्कृष्ट रूपे

Introduction | परिचय

When we compare things in Marathi, we use special constructions for comparative (comparing two things) and superlative (comparing three or more things) degrees. Unlike English which uses “-er/-est” endings, Marathi uses specific particles and constructions.

जेव्हा आपण मराठीत वस्तूंची तुलना करतो, तेव्हा तुलनात्मक (दोन गोष्टींची तुलना) आणि उत्कृष्ट (तीन किंवा अधिक गोष्टींची तुलना) पदवीसाठी विशेष रचना वापरतो. इंग्रजीप्रमाणे “-er/-est” शेवट न वापरता, मराठीत विशिष्ट कण आणि रचना वापरल्या जातात.

There are three degrees of comparison in Marathi, just like in English:

Degree English Marathi Usage
Positive big, good मोठा, चांगला Simple quality
Comparative bigger, better मोठा, चांगला + पेक्षा Comparing two things
Superlative biggest, best सर्वात मोठा, सर्वात चांगला Comparing three or more

1. Comparative Degree | तुलनात्मक पदवी

Formation with पेक्षा (pekṣā) | पेक्षा सह निर्मिती

The particle पेक्षा (pekṣā) means “than” and is used to form comparatives. The structure is:

Structure: [Noun 1] + [Adjective] + पेक्षा + [Noun 2]

Note: Unlike English, the adjective form stays the same - only the particle changes!

Basic Pattern

X is bigger than Y Y पेक्षा X मोठा आहे राम पेक्षा श्याम मोठा आहे.
X is better than Y Y पेक्षा X चांगला आहे हे पेक्षा ते चांगले आहे.

Ram is bigger than Shyam. श्याम पेक्षा राम मोठा आहे. śyām pekṣā rām moṭhā āhē.
This book is better than that. त्या पुस्तका पेक्षा हे पुस्तक चांगले आहे. tyā pustakā pekṣā hē pustak cāṅgale āhē.
Mumbai is bigger than Pune. पुण्या पेक्षा मुंबई मोठी आहे. puṇyā pekṣā mumbaī moṭhī āhē.
She is more beautiful than her sister. तिच्या बहिणी पेक्षा ती सुंदर आहे. ticyā bhiṇī pekṣā tī sundar āhē.
Gold is more expensive than silver. चांदी पेक्षा सोने महाग आहे. cāṅdī pekṣā sōnē mahāg āhē.
Today is hotter than yesterday. काला पेक्षा आज गरम आहे. kālā pekṣā āj garam āhē.

Word Order Note | शब्दक्रम टीप

Notice that in Marathi, the word order is different from English:

The comparison word पेक्षा comes after the thing being compared to!

2. Superlative Degree | उत्कृष्ट पदवी

Formation with सर्वात (sarvāt) | सर्वात सह निर्मिती

The particle सर्वात (sarvāt) means “most” or “of all” and is used to form superlatives. The structure is:

Structure: [Noun] + सर्वात + [Adjective] + आहे

Examples | उदाहरणे

Ram is the biggest of all. राम सर्वात मोठा आहे. rām sarvāt moṭhā āhē.
This is the best book. हे सर्वात चांगले पुस्तक आहे. hē sarvāt cāṅgale pustak āhē.
Mumbai is the biggest city. मुंबई सर्वात मोठे शहर आहे. mumbaī sarvāt moṭhe śahar āhē.
She is the most beautiful. ती सर्वात सुंदर आहे. tī sarvāt sundar āhē.
Gold is the most expensive metal. सोने सर्वात महाग धातू आहे. sōnē sarvāt mahāg dhātū āhē.
Mount Everest is the highest peak. एव्हरेस्ट सर्वात उंच शिखर आहे. ēvharest sarvāt uṅc śikhar āhē.

3. Irregular Comparatives | अनियमित तुलनात्मक रूपे

Some adjectives have special comparative and superlative forms in Marathi:

काही विशेषणांची मराठीत विशेष तुलनात्मक आणि उत्कृष्ट रूपे आहेत:

1. चांगला (Good) - Better - Best

2. वाईट (Bad) - Worse - Worst

Superlative worst सर्वाधिक वाईट / कनिष्ठ sarvādhik vāīṭ / kaniṣṭha

3. मोठा (Big) - Bigger - Biggest

For size, special words can also be used:

4. लहान (Small) - Smaller - Smallest

त्याला कमी झोप लागते. tyālā kamī zhōpa lāgatē. He gets less sleep.
आज कमी पाऊस पडला. āj kamī pāusa paḍalā. It rained less today.

5. Expressing Equality | समानता व्यक्त करणे

Using इतका (itkā) - As…as

Structure: [Noun 1] + [Adjective] + इतका + [Noun 2]

English Marathi Transliteration
Ram is as tall as Shyam. राम श्याम इतका उंच आहे. rām śyām itkā uṅc āhē.
This flower is as beautiful as that. हे फूल त्या फुला इतके सुंदर आहे. hē phūl tyā phulā itkē sundar āhē.
She is as intelligent as her brother. ती तिच्या भावा इतकी हुशार आहे. tī ticyā bhāvā itkī huśār āhē.

Using सारखा (sārkhā) - Like

English Marathi Transliteration
He is like his father. तो त्याच्या वडिलां सारखा आहे. tō tyācyā vaḍilāṃ sārkhā āhē.
She sings like a professional. ती व्यावसायिकां सारखी गाते. tī vyāvasāyikāṃ sārkhī gātē.

Rewrite using पेक्षा:
