Common Postpositions in Marathi | मराठीतील सामान्य शब्दयोगी अव्यय

Introduction | परिचय

Postpositions (शब्दयोगी अव्यय - śabdyogī avyay) are words that show the relationship between a noun and other words in a sentence. Unlike English, which uses prepositions (words that come BEFORE nouns), Marathi uses postpositions - words that come AFTER nouns. This is a fundamental difference between the two languages.

शब्दयोगी अव्यय हे वाक्यातील नाम आणि इतर शब्दांमधील संबंध दर्शवणारे शब्द आहेत. इंग्रजीप्रमाणे, जे नामांपूर्वी येणारे शब्द (prepositions) वापरते, मराठीत नामांनंतर येणारे शब्द (postpositions) वापरले जातात. हा दोन भाषांमधील मूलभूत फरक आहे.

Notice how the English preposition comes BEFORE the noun, while the Marathi postposition comes AFTER the noun!

1. मध्ये (madhyē) - In, Inside | मध्ये

Usage | वापर

मध्ये indicates location inside something - corresponding to “in”, “inside”, or “within” in English.

वर indicates position on a surface or above something - corresponding to “on”, “upon”, or “above” in English.

खाली indicates position below something - corresponding to “under”, “below”, or “beneath” in English.
